We interviewed two muslim girls from ASEAN countries about "Life in Japan as muslims". These Indonesia girls named Nurul and Fira now study in Shonan Fujisawa Campus(SFC), Keio University as international students. They have faced with several problems, especially how to follow their own faith as minority in Japan.
ーObstacles for muslims in Japan Nurul:
There are enough number of musholla in tourist spots in Tokyo, so that`s great. But the rest of the country (rural areas) is still lack of place to pray. Fira: Yeah, I think it is the biggest obstacles for being a muslim in Japan, but there is only one prayer room in our campus.
ーHow about food in Japan? Fira: There is also a food problem, because you know, muslims do not eat pork but there`s abundant of foods that we shall not eat such as gelatin... Nurul: Besides, there is also a language problem. it is difficult to read important informations that describe the contents of food only in kanji(Chinese character) for foreigners including us. We need to ask for someone... Fira: There is a Google Translate now, but it`s still inconvenient. Nurul: We have to check every single things if we don`t wanna eat them. Fira: I have one experience when I check the contents of drink, but it seems that I had missed the kanji that explain forbidden contents and we noticed that after drinking..lol
